Why is My MEPCO Bill Higher Than Last Month?
Why Did My MEPCO Bill Increase This Month?
A sudden jump in your MEPCO electricity bill can be alarming. There are many legitimate reasons why bills increase — and in most cases, the cause can be identified and addressed. Here are the top 10 reasons.
Reason 1: You Crossed the 200-Unit Protected Consumer Threshold
This is the most common reason for a dramatic bill increase. If consumption went from 195 to 210 units, you moved from Protected to Non-Protected category. The rate jumps from Rs. 10.06 to Rs. 17.40/unit — applied to all units, not just the extra ones.
Solution: Keep monthly consumption under 200 units to retain Protected status.
Reason 2: Increased Usage Due to Weather
Summer heat forces ACs, coolers, and fans to run longer. A single AC running an extra 4 hours per day adds approximately 90–120 units per month.
Solution: Set AC at 26°C and use timers.
Reason 3: Change in FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment)
If FPA increased by Rs. 2 per unit and you consumed 300 units, your bill increases by Rs. 600 without any change in usage.
Solution: Compare the FPA rate on current and previous bills.
Reason 4: Billing Period Longer Than Usual
If the meter reader visited late, your billing period may be 32–33 days instead of 30. More days = more units billed.
Solution: Check the READING DATE on your bill and count days between readings.
Reason 5: Addition of a New Appliance
A new AC, washing machine, or geyser adds significantly to monthly consumption. Even a new refrigerator can add 40–80 units per month.
Reason 6: Estimated Bill in Previous Month
If last month was estimated lower than actual, this month's actual reading catches up — making this month appear higher.
Solution: Look for "EST" or "ESTIMATED" on previous bills.
Reason 7: Tariff Rate Increase by NEPRA
NEPRA occasionally approves tariff increases. If this coincides with your billing month, your bill will be higher even with the same consumption.
Reason 8: Arrears or Previous Unpaid Amount
Outstanding previous bills are added to your current bill. Check the "ARREAR/AGE" row on your bill.
Reason 9: Meter Fault or Fast Meter
A faulty meter can record more units than actually consumed. Compare your actual meter reading with the reading on the bill.
Solution: Request a meter accuracy test from MEPCO Sub-Division office.
Reason 10: Electricity Theft or Wiring Leakage
If someone is illegally drawing power from your connection, your meter records the extra consumption. Turn off all appliances and check if the meter is still running — if yes, get wiring inspected.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
