TV Fee and Meter Rent in MEPCO Bill – What You Are Paying For
TV Fee on MEPCO Bill
The TV Fee (PTV License Fee) is a fixed charge of Rs. 35 per month collected on behalf of Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV). It appears as "TV FEE" in the Government Charges section of your bill.
Why is PTV Fee Collected Through the Electricity Bill?
Instead of collecting this fee separately, the Government directed electricity companies to collect the TV license fee with electricity bills — making collection more efficient since nearly every household has an electricity connection.
Do I Pay TV Fee Even Without a TV?
In practice, MEPCO collects TV fee from all domestic consumers regardless of whether they own a television. There is no simple exemption process — you would need to contact PTV directly, as MEPCO is only the collection agent.
Meter Rent on MEPCO Bill
Meter Rent is a monthly rental charge for the electricity meter installed at your premises by MEPCO. The meter is owned by MEPCO and you pay a small monthly rental:
- Single phase digital meter: Approximately Rs. 10–25 per month
- Three phase meter: Higher rental amount
Can Meter Rent Be Removed?
Consumers who have purchased their own meter from MEPCO may have meter rent removed. This requires a formal application and approval from MEPCO Sub-Division office.
Annual Cost of These Charges
- TV Fee: Rs. 35 × 12 = Rs. 420 per year
- Meter Rent: Rs. 10–25 × 12 = Rs. 120–300 per year
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I get the TV fee waived if I don't have a television?
A: In practice this is very difficult. Contact PTV directly rather than MEPCO as MEPCO is only the collection agent.
Q: My old bills did not have meter rent — why does my new bill show it?
A: Meter rent may appear due to tariff category changes or meter replacement. Contact your MEPCO Sub-Division for clarification.
Q: Is TV fee subject to GST?
A: Generally no, as it is a government levy. However, meter rent may be subject to GST as a service charge.
