MEPCO Protected Consumer Category – Who Qualifies?
What is a MEPCO Protected Consumer?
A Protected Consumer in MEPCO is a residential consumer who uses 200 units (kWh) or less per month. The government provides a subsidy to these consumers, meaning they pay significantly lower rates than higher-usage consumers.
Who Qualifies as a MEPCO Protected Consumer?
- Your connection must be domestic/residential (A-1a tariff)
- Monthly consumption must be 200 units or less
- Connection must be single phase
- Must be a MEPCO consumer in South Punjab
What Benefits Does a Protected Consumer Get?
- 1–50 units: Rs. 3.95/unit vs Rs. 17.40–30.00 for non-protected
- 1–100 units: Rs. 7.74/unit
- 101–200 units: Rs. 10.06/unit
A consumer using exactly 200 units pays approximately Rs. 2,000–2,500 per month. A non-protected consumer using 201 units could pay Rs. 4,000+ — a dramatic jump for just 1 extra unit.
The 200 Unit Threshold
If your consumption crosses 200 units even by 1 unit, you lose Protected status for that entire month. All units become charged at the non-protected rate.
How to Stay in Protected Consumer Category
- Monitor your monthly consumption carefully
- Set AC thermostat to 26°C or higher
- Use energy-saving LED bulbs
- Avoid running multiple heavy appliances simultaneously
- Reduce usage in the last week of the billing cycle if near 200 units
What Happens If I Exceed 200 Units?
If you exceed 200 units in a given month, you become Non-Protected for that month only. Your next month resets — if you go back below 200 units, you automatically return to Protected status.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Is the 200 unit limit per month or per year?
A: It is per billing month. Each month is assessed independently.
Q: What if my meter reading was estimated above 200 units?
A: Request an actual meter reading from MEPCO. If corrected to below 200 units, you will be reclassified as Protected for that month.
Q: I use 195 units normally but sometimes hit 210. What should I do?
A: Track your usage and reduce heavy appliance use in the final days of your billing cycle to stay under 200 units.
